Clothes make a man & destroy a woman...

A post by Hemalatha while being undeniably good, intentionally or otherwise caused some very interesting people to comment on it. The comments were funny but they also make me worry at the kind of people my daughter will be exposed to one day. It came down to clothes that women wear which somehow became the root cause of all evil in the world.

One interesting conclusion was that Indian men are horrible. But what about all the decent men who are there? Yes, there are decent men who respect women and support them in their endeavours. So we can rephrase to some Indian men are horrible because they do not understand themselves and so they cannot understand women.

Cut to the Wimbledon finals, both were depressingly one sided and the winners caused one nation to go into ecstasy when their adopted son brought back the glory after 77 years and the other winner received scorn. Marion Bartoli did not look graceful on court as her movement was ungainly but she promptly dispatched the challenger in straight sets and during this tournament did not lose a single set. But the comments about her online were terrible, because she did not look good enough. People can accept a butt digging male player or another who lumbers around like a mule with an afro hair cut but a woman who does not cut to their specs is derided because of her sex.

One particularly offensive comment was that she did not look good enough to be raped. At that moment I understood the utility of a burqa. And these comments were made from people who are not from India. For these people the clothes did not matter, the anatomy did. I was rooting for her opponent because she overcame Serena Williams who seemed unbeatable on the way to the finals but in the final Marion Bartoli won my respect because she was good at what she did. Her clumsy climb up the spectators’ gallery to celebrate with her loved ones and her outpouring of emotions afterwards showed that she was a genuine winner who did not confirm to the specifications of others who would have been happier with Anna Kournikova on court even if she was the recipient of a white wash.

I fear for my daughter…

  1. I did read the horrible comments on the winner of the ladies Wimbledon. The misogyny is appalling and women are always the scapegoats. I was thinking of our system but everywhere this seems to be the norm. Sometimes it is the clothes, other times it's the weight, then there is the issue of purdahs and religious sentiments. I'm frankly tired and horrified.

    Your fears are justified.

    Joy always,
    Susan

  2. Yeah, it's a dangerous place for a kid... this world, how did we as a human race manage to get to such despicable levels. Well, all we can do is put our hope upon the Lord and do the best we can...

  3. Hi,

    I cant comprehend this post.

Looks like the 1 & 2 para is different issue and the rest a different issue, but the victim is women and the doer is men.

While I didn't understand why you mixed both issues, I do understand your fear for your daughter. Not to worry the world ain't insane much.

  4. @Susan Deborah: Hang in there, a bridge you will have to cross

@Karen Xavier: In the Lord is my hope...

@Ravi: Thanks for stopping by. My posts sometimes are a collection of my thoughts, you may not always find a clear logical thread. This post is not about victims and offenders but the simple lack of respect for another human being, why should the respect be any different due to gender? The world is insane, trust me

  6. It is a sad world that women the way men (and women) speak of other women.

During the debates of the presidential primaries the media discussed each of the male participants views and comments on the issues, when it came to Hillary Clinton, they discussed the designer of her pant suit. Never once was a comment made about the men's suits or ties.

Real men will stand up for women and tell men who make demeaning comments that the comment is unacceptable. Real women need to support each other, not compete and tear each other down.
